Understanding Statistical Measures: Theory, Usage, and History
Statistical Measures Explained
Mean (Average)
Sum of all values divided by the number of values. Most commonly used measure of central tendency.
Median
Middle value when data is arranged in order. Less affected by extreme values than the mean.
Mode
Most frequently occurring value in the dataset. Useful for categorical data.
History of Statistics
The field of statistics originated from the need to collect and analyze data for governmental purposes. The word "statistics" comes from the Latin "statisticum collegium" (council of state). Modern statistical methods were developed in the 17th and 18th centuries by mathematicians like John Graunt, who analyzed mortality data, and Carl Friedrich Gauss, who developed the normal distribution.

Quick Tips
- • Use median when data has outliers or extreme values
- • Mode is useful for finding the most common score
- • Consider the context when choosing which average to use
- • Standard deviation shows how spread out the data is
